A1/A2 motorbike license update from 2025!

 

1/ What is a lifetime Vietnamese A1/A2 motorbike license?

When you live in Vietnam, an A motorbike license (or A1/A2 Vietnamese motorbike license) is one of the most common things required for everyone who wants to drive a two-wheel motorbike (A3 is for a motorbike with a sidecar or any 3-wheelers). The biggest advantage of it is that the Vietnamese motorbike license will never expire if you are a 95-year-old person whose knees are falling apart but still want to ride to the nearest grocery store.

2/ What is the update in 2025?

According to Article 57 of the draft Law on Road Traffic Order and Safety in the Vietnamese Traffic Law, after January 1st, 2025, all drivers who want to do the A1 test can only drive motorbikes smaller than 125cc (it’s still lifetime though). And if you take the test to get the A1 motorbike license before January 1st, 2025, you are still able to drive any motorbikes under 175cc without any issues.

For example, if you take the test on December 31st of 2024, your new license will issued around January 22nd of 2025, which means you can only drive motorbikes 125cc or below. The best chance is to get it at this moment and to have it issued beefore January 1st 2025. In that way, you can make good use of it.

If your A1/A2 license is issued before the given time, you can still convert/renew it afterwards. The value of your new license will be the same as your old one. The only difference is the A1/A2 will become A. (There To distinguish

3/ Why must you take the Vietnamese lifetime motorbike license before January 1st, 2025?

After the given time, you can only drive bikes under 125cc, which is inconvenient in some particular ways:

1/ Problem with 150cc sport models:

The Honda CBR150r, Yamaha R15 or any 150cc sport models you like to ride would likely to be illegal if you don’t upgrade your license to A2 if your license issused after January 1st, 2025.

2/ Problem with 150cc common bikes:

Other types of common 150cc bikes like Honda Winner models, Yamaha Exciter models or even 150cc automatic bikes like Honda PCX, Air Blade and Yamaha NVX, will often be checked after the update.
